gecko-mediaplayer as Flash Alternative for YouTube
Flash on amd64 is a bit of a burden and I don't need it anymore because I mostly used it for youtube. Not that you can't download the video with filsh.net and watch it with mplayer or vlc but it's inconvenient.
An alternative solution for this is www/gecko-mediaplayer. For embedded videos you are already done but for youtube you also need the Greasemonkey Add-On for Firefox and the Youtube without Flash Auto Greasemonkey script. If you are on a youtube site watch out for the new buttons "View without Flash" below the video.

2. Grazer BSD Stammtisch
Vorige Woche war bereits der 2. Grazer BSD Stammtisch im Bierbaron in Graz mit 5 Teilnehmern. Ein sehr gutes Wachstum für den Anfang. Die Gruppe ist gut gemischt was den Einsatz und die Anforderungen an BSD angeht aber gerade das macht den Erfahrungsaustausch interessant und sorgt für viel Gesprächsstoff. Wir sind aber nicht nur BSD fixiert sondern diskutieren natürlich über alles was uns interessiert und so sind natürlich auch gerne Mac OSX, UNIX und Linux User herzlich willkommen und gerne gesehen.
Wir organisieren uns über die Facebook Gruppe Grazer BSD Stammtisch und haben auch bereits ein Stammlokal und ein Maskotchen. Das Maskotchen ist übrigens eine äußerst seltene Kreuzung aus Beastie und dem Grazer Panther.
Weitere Termine des Stammtisches werden in der Facebook Gruppe bekanntgegeben und einige von uns werden voraussichtlich auch auf der EuroBSDCon 2010 in Karlsruhe anzutreffen sein und der Grazer Linuxtag 2011 ist natürlich auch ein Pflichttermin für uns wo wir dank Daniel Seuffert wieder mit einem BSD Stand vertreten sein werden.

Grazer BSD Stammtisch
Da BSDler ja generell als trinkfest und gesellig gelten spielen wir momentan mit dem Gedanken einen BSD Stammtisch in Graz aufzubauen. Sinn der Aktion ist vorwiegend der Erfahrungs- und Meinungsaustausch in gemütlicher Runde. Wichtig wäre dafür aber erstmal zu wissen ob es im Grazer Umfeld Interesse an so einem Abend gibt deshalb bitte bei Interesse eine kurze Mail an mich oder einfach im Blog einen Kommentar hinterlassen.
Momentan sind wir übrigens 3 Leute und das Hauptthema des ersten Stammtisches wird sicherlich auch die mögliche Zukunft dessen sein. Als Location steht momentan der Bierbaron im Grazer Univiertel zur Diskussion.

FreeBSD at the Grazer Linuxtage 2010
For the first time ever FreeBSD had a booth on the Grazer Linuxtage this year. That was primarily the fault of Daniel Seuffert who agreed to pack all his material and drive to Graz to represent BSD with his own booth. Sure I couldn't let him do this alone so I agreed to help and also sperber and seppo helped us through the day. And I think we did quite well for the first time and also agreed to be there next year.
The event is mainly targeted at end users and enthusiastic open source users. So we were quite surprised about the interest in BSD given that this was the first year that we were there. It was also very pleasant to see all different kinds of people together and many women interested in beastie.

DVB-S Live TV on FreeBSD with MythTV 0.23 and webcamd
It's not true anymore that FreeBSD does not support any DVB-S devices. Thanks to the work of Hans Petter Selasky on video4bsd there are now DVB-S/2 devices for USB that just work.
The work on MythTV to get this running only took me one evening and was just because nobody compiled mythtv with v4l support lately. It also helped a lot that Jürgen Lock already played with the same device and found and fixes a few things.
So what do you need to do now if you want to build your PVR on FreeBSD?
First you need a USB device for DVB-C/DVB-T/DVB-S/DVB-S2 that is supported by webcamd. I took an Pinnacle PCTV Sat HDTV Pro USB 452e that supports DVB-S2 because I talked to Jürgen Lock and knew he had success with it. I don't know if there is already a list with all devices that work but you could have a look at the Makefile of webcamd in svn to see what drivers and cards should be supported.
Now that you have a supported card follow the instructions on the video4bsd page and build webcamd from the svn repository because the current version in ports is too old already.
At last get the latest mythtv 0.23 port from the call for testers that enables v4l support. This will get committed when they have done their release.
Finally start mythtv-setup and configure your v4l device, scan for some channels and watch live-tv with your brand new PVR solution on FreeBSD!

I'm a FreeBSD ports commiter now
Der commit von miwi beweist, dass ich nun offiziell FreeBSD port committer bin!
Gratulationen werden am liebsten auf den Grazer Linuxtagen am FreeBSD Stand entgegen genommen.
Danke an meinen mentor miwi und co-mentor beat für die gemeinsame Arbeit im VirtualBox team und für das kommende mentoring. Außerdem sorry gleich mal vorweg für das erste mal INDEX kaputt machen.

FreeBSD auf dem Grazer Linuxtag 2010
Es freut mich sehr, dass es dieses Jahr auf dem Grazer LinuxTag die Möglichkeit gibt einen Beastie zu bestaunen. Daniel Seuffert hat es möglich gemacht und wird mit Sack und Pack anreisen und einen FreeBSD Stand betreiben. Ich hab natürlich auch schon versprochen am Stand zu helfen also wenn ihr einfach mal vorbeischauen wollt oder die Chance ergreifen wollt eine BSD Zertifizierung zu machen dann notiert euch den 24. April 2010.

Nokia N900 nach einer Woche
Der erste Eindruck war wie erwartet umwerfend. Alles was man braucht funktioniert wie es soll und die Einstellungsmöglichkeiten sind so wie man es eigentlich nur vom Desktop her kennt. Nach einigen Tagen findet man immer noch neue Features die man schon fast vermisst hat. So hat man nach ein paar Tagen OpenSSH, Mobile Firefox und diverse Widgets installiert und gleicht seine EMails per IMAP ab während man per XMPP im Facebook Chat, per ICQ und im IRC über WLAN online ist. Also nach ein paar Tagen hat man kein Handy mehr sondern ein mobiles Netbook das auch mal eben telefonieren und SMS schicken kann.
Nachteile? Auf 2 Wochen Standby kommt man nicht aber mit etwas Zurückhaltung immerhin auf 3 bis 4 Tage und man sollte am Anfang einiges an Zeit einplanen um sich mit dem neuen Spielzeug anzufreunden - aber gerade das macht doch Geeks am meisten Spaß!
Kleinigkeiten gibt es natürlich immer die nicht ganz optimal funktionieren aber wenn man es realistisch betrachtet hat das Betriebssystem Maemo dort Fehler wo andere nicht einmal Features haben.
Die störenden Kleinigkeiten sind bisher folgende:
- Album Covers von Ogg/FLAC Alben werden im Media Player nicht angezeigt (Maemo Bug #7413)
- Es gibt keine automatische Trennung von UMTS/WLAN Verbindungen bei Inaktivität
Dafür gibt es umso mehr positives:
- Sowohl der eingebaute Browser als auch Mobile Firefox 1.0 sind sehr gut bedienbar und flott. Vom Rendering her tadellos - immerhin steckt Gecko dahinter.
- Für die Tastatur braucht man ein paar Tage um sich daran zu gewöhnen aber dann will man sie nicht mehr missen! On-Screen Tastaturen sind wirklich Spielzeug im Vergleich dazu.
- Stabilität und Geschwindigkeit der ganzen Software ist ausgezeichnet.
- Die Offenheit des ganzen Systems ist derzeit unerreicht. Man ist wieder Herr seines Geräts und wenn etwas nicht passt wird es passend gemacht - zur Not mit Patch und neu kompilieren.
- Die Bedienung ist am Anfang ein wenig gewöhnungsbedürftig aber konsistent und lässt sich sehr gut per Finger steuern.

bluelife.at jetzt auch SSL gesichert
Ich verwende ja schon seit längerem kostenlose StartSSL Zertifikate aber aus Mangel an IP Adressen war die Homepage selbst bisher nicht per https gesichert. Man kann ja aus Protokolldesigngründen noch keine VHosts mit SSL kombinieren außer man hat Wildcard Zertifikate die sind aber wiederum sehr teuer. Nun hab ich aber glücklicherweise bemerkt, dass StartCom seine Zertifikate nicht nur für die Subdomain ausstellt die man beim erstellen angibt sondern zusätzlich noch die Hauptdomain selbst. Das ist ja beinahe schon ein Wildcard Zertifikat und erfüllt genau meine Anforderungen.
Deshalb gibts jetzt bluelife.at auch SSL gesichert und war außerdem noch kostenlos.
