Donations for 2010

Since a few years I have a tradition to donate a small percentage of my yearly income to Open Source projects. Over the years I have refined my thoughts about it and what I want to archive with it. To keep the overhead low and to reach the correct people with that donation I prefer to directly donate to the people. What is also important to mention is that it is always meant as a "Thank you for your great work" so it is not connected to any requirements. I usually take a few moments at the end of the year to think about what was archieved in the last year and had a big impact on my work or to what I think is important for FreeBSD.

So without further ado my donation for 2010 goes to Hans Petter Selasky for his extraordinary work on webcamd which enables FreeBSD to use modern DVB-S/C/T USB devices and webcams. This makes FreeBSD a viable platform for Home Theater PCs and improves our multimedia support.

Thanks a lot Hans for your great work!

XBMC 10.0 is available in the FreeBSD ports collection now!

Thanks to Mickael Maillot and all testers on multimedia@ we now have a working XBMC 10.0 port. Go check it out!

XBMC Port for FreeBSD

Good news for all multimedia users! The XBMC port is ready for wider testing so please test and give us feedback how it worked for you.

If someone knows how to create a PBI for it i'm sure there would be a few people on PC-BSD interested in XBMC.

MythTV 0.24 for FreeBSD

The new MythTV 0.24 is now out for a week and no call for testers has yet been done. I'm sorry for that but there are a few more details that have to be fixed first and I am at the BSDDay in Hungary over the weekend so don't expect a call for testers of it until late November. But it basically works so i can already show you a few screenshots of it.

I've also spend some time getting mythplugin-mythvideo working correctly with metadata download. Looks quite nice to me.

gecko-mediaplayer as Flash Alternative for YouTube

Flash on amd64 is a bit of a burden and I don't need it anymore because I mostly used it for youtube. Not that you can't download the video with filsh.net and watch it with mplayer or vlc but it's inconvenient.

An alternative solution for this is www/gecko-mediaplayer. For embedded videos you are already done but for youtube you also need the Greasemonkey Add-On for Firefox and the Youtube without Flash Auto Greasemonkey script. If you are on a youtube site watch out for the new buttons "View without Flash" below the video.

Update: Youtube changed something and the greasemonkey script stopped working. Use the Free Youtube! script and it plays fine again.

DVB-S Live TV on FreeBSD with MythTV 0.23 and webcamd

It's not true anymore that FreeBSD does not support any DVB-S devices. Thanks to the work of Hans Petter Selasky on video4bsd there are now DVB-S/2 devices for USB that just work.

The work on MythTV to get this running only took me one evening and was just because nobody compiled mythtv with v4l support lately. It also helped a lot that Jürgen Lock already played with the same device and found and fixes a few things.

So what do you need to do now if you want to build your PVR on FreeBSD?

First you need a USB device for DVB-C/DVB-T/DVB-S/DVB-S2 that is supported by webcamd. I took an Pinnacle PCTV Sat HDTV Pro USB 452e that supports DVB-S2 because I talked to Jürgen Lock and knew he had success with it. I don't know if there is already a list with all devices that work but you could have a look at the Makefile of webcamd in svn to see what drivers and cards should be supported.

Now that you have a supported card follow the instructions on the video4bsd page and build webcamd from the svn repository because the current version in ports is too old already.

At last get the latest mythtv 0.23 port from the call for testers that enables v4l support. This will get committed when they have done their release.

Finally start mythtv-setup and configure your v4l device, scan for some channels and watch live-tv with your brand new PVR solution on FreeBSD!

Last.FM Radio

Früher war es einfacher denn da hörten die einen nur Radio und alle anderen suchten die CD Regale durch und fanden beim Probehören gelegentlich mal wieder eine neue Lieblingsband.

Dann kam Napster, alle begannen Musik zu tauschen (auch wenn ich immer noch glaube, dass es dabei mehr um das tauschen als hören ging) und niemand wollte mehr für Musik bezahlen geschweigedem die CD Regale durchstöbern.

Nach unzähligen Superstar-Castings und anderen Verfehlungen begreift die Musikindustrie nun aber scheinbar schön langsam, dass dich doch noch Geld machen lässt. Kleine Labels haben diese Jahre besser genutzt und produzierten Musik die von Menschen gehört und geschätzt wird. Solche Bands sind oft relativ unbekannt, produzieren aber trotzdem sehr hochqualitative Musik.

Entgegen vieler bin ich der Meinung, dass in den letzten Jahren sehr viele hervorragende Alben entstanden sind aber es ist schwerer geworden sie auch zu finden. Genau hier kommt last.fm ins Spiel die mit ihrer riesigen Datenbank von Userprofilen und der ebenso gigantische Musikbibliothek den Überblick haben. Damit entdeckt man in kürzester Zeit diverse Bands und Alben von deren Existenz man nicht einmal zu hoffen gewagt hat und noch dazu kostenlos. Natürlich bezahlt man indem man einen Teil seiner Privatspähre und seinen Musikgeschmack preisgibt (und anschließend zu Amazon eilt um die CDs zu bestellen) aber für gute Musik bin ich gerne bereit zu bezahlen.

Noch viel intensiver wird die Erfahrung wenn man den Last.FM Player verwendet der ähnlich wie ein Radio funktioniert also selbstständig Musik spielt und auswählt. Man kann nur die Kanäle/Musikrichtung beeinflussen und die gespielten Titel eigenen Listen hinzufügen und so begibt man sich auf eine musikalische Entdeckungstour bei der man andauernd auf neue Meisterwerke stößt.

In den FreeBSD ports findet man ihn unter audio/last.fm.

Hospital Records

Wie einige sicher schon wissen bin ich seit mehreren Jahren ein treuer Hospital Records Fan. Angefangen hat es bei mir mit London Elektricity wenn weiter zu Nu:Tone und High Contrast. NuTone verfeinert derzeit übrigens seinen ohnehin schon genialen Track System noch mit Matrix & Futurebound. Einen kurzen Einblick gibt es als MP3 - Nu:Tone - System (Matrix + Futurebound Remix).

Gerade vorhin habe ich mir das neue Album "Tough Guys don't dance" von High Contrast gekauft. Seit mehreren Podcasts und Wochen habe ich schon sehnsüchtig darauf gewartet und bin absolut begeistert. 75min abwechslungsreichen Drum and Bass der Spitzenklasse.

Für alle die gerne einmal in Drum and Bass reinschnuppern aber kein Geld ausgeben wollen gibt es den 2 wöchentlichen Hospital Podcast der Lust auf mehr macht.

Wieso können nicht alle Labels so sein? Hospital Records bietet einen genialen Podcast, spitzen Künstler die ihre Branche verstehen und allesamt sehr aktiv sind und seit längerem schon einen MP3 Download aller Alben zu vernünftigen Preisen ohne DRM und 320kbps Qualität. Jetzt fehlt mir nur mehr ein "I Love Hospital Records" Autoaufkleber :o)

Es reicht!

Die Musikindustrie, der Dinosaurier der zu dumm war um die Zeichen der Zeit zu erkennen und nun versucht mit Klagewellen die Situation zu bessern kann mir gestohlen bleiben.

Ich habe kein Problem damit für gute Musik auch entsprechend zu bezahlen aber die Musikindustrie versucht derzeit mit allen Mitteln seine überteuerten Preise und unverschämte DRM Mechanismen zu halten. Da spiel ich nicht mit! Da kann die IPFI noch so oft vom Kirchturm plärren, dass Raubkopierer Verbrecher sind und mit Mördern auf einer Treppe stehen.

Music Tipps

Kürzlich hab ich auf FM4 wieder mal einen Track gehört der mich in der Früh bei der täglichen Fahrt zur Arbeit schon fasziniert hat. Ein kurzer Blick auf das Tracklisting hat ergeben, dass es sich dabei um die Trip Hop Band Porotone handelte.
